Art and Design

AAims of Art and Design at St Stephen's

At St Stephen’s Primary School, we value Art as a subject which inspires and develops their cultural and moral understanding. Art and Design is an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum and provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills, along with expressing their individual interests and ideas. It allows children to communicate what they see, feel and think, using colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials, processes and techniques.  A high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

The aims of art and design are:

  • To develop creativity and imagination through a range of activities
  • To improve children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques
  • To develop children’s confidence in the use of materials, tools and techniques
  • To appreciate and be inspired from a range of artists, craftspeople and designers.

National curriculum coverage

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Pupils should be taught:
