PSHE

Aims of PSHE at St Stephen's

PSHE lessons at St Stephen’s aim to build on our ethos of Nurture, Grow, Flourish in supporting the children to develop as confident individuals.   Our progressive curriculum ensures that the children leave St Stephen’s equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to adapt to a diverse, challenging and ever-changing world.

The PSHE curriculum is taught using the Jigsaw PSHE framework which holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world.

Through using the Jigsaw curriculum, we promote the social, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils, both within school and society as a whole.   The Jigsaw curriculum actively promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at our school.

We offer comprehensive lessons in a progressive and fully planned series of schemes giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate the world and help them develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

Promoting British values

Promoting British values

The fundamental ‘British values’ defined by the DfE are:

  1. Democracy - respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process.
  2. The Rule of Law - respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in Britain.
  3. Individual Liberty - support and respect for the liberties of all within the law.
  4. Tolerance and Mutual Respect - support for equality of opportunity for all and respect and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs.

Democracy

The Rule of Law

Individual Liberty

Tolerance and Mutual  Respect

Children learn about having a voice within their community and the importance of listening to the views of others.

Democracy is a huge part of PSHE, as PSHE teaches children to give their opinions and to empathise with other people.

We have the opportunity to explore and discuss injustices and inequalities (perceived or real) and challenge and debate these through the exploration of our PSHE topics

We have the opportunity to explore and consider different opinions and how voices are heard.

Children are taught the importance of being a law-abiding citizen.

Children are given the opportunity to discuss various British laws and understand how they fit into society.

Children follow learning expectations in our classroom to protect the rights of all us to an education

We uphold whole-school policies with regards to homework, uniform etc.

Children are encouraged to be openminded and consider the thoughts and feelings of others.

Children are taught how to make life choices and exercise their rights as an individual in society.

PSHE enables children to feel more confident, so they make speak freely and be honest about their opinions and how they feel.

Children are taught to reflect on the choices they make and consider their future choices carefully.

Children are supported and actively encouraged to make choices about their behaviour, with a good understanding of the consequences in the Autumn 1 unit, Being Me in My World.

Children are encouraged to celebrate who they are by building their self-esteem and helping them to manage their feelings (Celebrating Difference, Healthy Me, Relationships, Changing Me).

Children are taught to be aware of the lifestyles of children their age in developing countries that are not as liberated to develop their empathy skills.

Children are encouraged to respect and understand the faiths and beliefs of others.

As a school we promote diversity and through PSHE, we encourage children to celebrate diversity and the differences which make us individuals.

Mutual respect is taught through PSHE when children take part in group discussions and activities.

Children are taught to take into account the thoughts and feelings of others, so they can speak freely.

Children are encouraged to make other children feel valued and welcome in the group.
